Leo's Hangar
Home of the Flint Hills Flyers
This photograph is looking north toward the hangar and
shows part of the north/south runway and part of the
east/west runway.
Located approximately 4 miles east of Riley, Kansas, the
Flint Hills Flyers Hangar and Leo's Place Airport, along
with 30 acres of land, were donated to the Flint Hills
Flyers in 1996 by club member Leo Walter.
Leo had soloed in 1940 but "the war fouled me up - I gave
it up" said Leo. He began work on his landing strip in
1972, shortly after he renewed his interest in flying.
Many locals could tell when Leo had taken to the air in his
Piper Cub or Scamp as they could see and hear him cruising
the Kansas countryside. He enjoyed the Scamp because he was
able to enjoy the view in the slower open cockpit plane.
Leo's love for flying never diminished with age. He loved
to just go out for a spin in his airplane. Leo passed away
in 1996, but his memory is alive and well and soaring
through the Kansas sky in the hearts of the Flint Hills
Flyers.
