Kansas State University announced today the hiring of Garry Bowman as assistant sports information director.

Bowman comes to K-State after serving as assistant sports information director at San Diego State for the past three years. He will work primarily with the Wildcat men’s basketball program and also assist with KSU’s media relations efforts for football and coordinate publicity for both the men’s and women’s golf teams.

A 1997 graduate of San Diego State, Bowman brings over seven years of sports information experience with him to Manhattan. For the past three years, he has served as an assistant director of media relations at SDSU, where he was the co-football contact for the Aztecs. He also directed media relations efforts for women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf and track and field.

In 2001, Bowman served as the assistant media coordinator for the NCAA Men’s Basketball First/Second Rounds in San Diego. Later that year, he worked in the same capacity for the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Final Four at Cox Arena and also coordinated publicity for the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships.

Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Bowman worked as a media relations assistant at the University of California from 1997-99. While in Berkeley, he worked closely with both the Golden Bears’ football and men’s basketball programs in addition to serving as the primary media contact for six Olympic sports. He also assisted with media relations efforts at the 1997 NCAA Men’s Basketball First/Second Rounds in Sacramento and the 1997 NCAA Women’s Basketball West Regional in Oakland.

A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., who was raised in southern California, Bowman received his start in collegiate sports information while completing his bachelor’s degree at San Diego State and served two years as a student assistant in the Aztec Media Relations Office.

A father of two boys, Jordan (5) and Josh (1), Bowman is married to the former Jill Fure.
