Commissioner Reitz Wants Child Care Center Meeting

By Jon A. Brake

City Commissioner Roger Reitz told the Manhattan City Commission Tuesday night that he will conduct a meeting of all of the parties involved in the new Child Care Center at Wharton Manor.

Reitz said he is very concerned because the Child Care Center has to be up and running by the 1st of the year or they will loose the $235,000 state grant money.

The Riley County Commission owns the building and will lease half to the Child Care Center and half to the Manhattan Area Technical College for a dental assistants school.

Reitz said he wanted to make sure he was not breaking the Kansas Open Meetings Act by holding the meeting. He will be the only City Commission member and Al Johnson will be the only Riley County Commission member.

City Attorney Bill Front told Reitz that if the meeting was not being form by the City or County Commission it would not be in violation of the law.
