Office Secretary, Janette (Mahar) Mize

jmize.jpg (31907 bytes)Janette became involved with the Kansas Shrine Bowl when her husband, David, was hired by the Kansas Shrine Bowl in July of 1981. Her first task was to learn as much as possible in one week about the Kansas Shrine Bowl and it’s office operations from Evelyn Painter, who was resigning as office secretary. The plan was for Janette to eventually train the new office secretary when the office moved to Wamego in the fall of 1981.

Following the move and the set up of the office in Wamego the office became too busy with preparations of the 1982 game and there was no time to hire and train another office secretary. After the successful 1982 game, Janette was officially hired as the office secretary. She has remained in that capacity since then and has expanded office operation many-fold during the years.

Janette implemented the layout department in the Kansas Shrine Bowl office saving the Kansas Shrine Bowl thousands of dollars in printing expenses. Initially she performed the layout duties by cutting and pasting by hand and did simplified type setting on a typewriter. She now does almost all ad preparation function on a computer.

Mrs. Mize’s duties include being full time receptionist, bookkeeping & accounting, scheduling, inventory control, mailing and shipping, and word processing.

Janette was born the third daughter of Dave and Marge (Ladd) Mahar of Eureka, Kansas. During Janette’s sophomore year in high school she moved with her parents and four sisters to a suburb of Kansas City where she attended Washington High School. After she graduated with honors, Janette married Dave Mize and they moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, while Dave finished out the fourth year of his enlistment in the army. Janette has been a homemaker and mother to their two sons and has worked from time to time in retail and in accounting.

Janette has held many civic and social offices in groups and is currently active in Portia Club (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) and is secretary of the Pottawatomie County Republican Central Committee. She loves to play bridge, bargain hunt for antiques, read, and make crafts of many sorts.
