KCKA MEMBER NOTES: There
no longer is a permit application. They went to a 60 day call ahead reservation
system. 25-PERSON LIMIT, $7/PERSON FEE. Despite my initial reservations, the new system actually works
pretty well with the calendar posted & updated on-line. Just set your
calendar to remind you 60 days ahead of your desired launch date. BTW, all kayak groups must
now carry a "solid
waste" day-use "screw-top plastic Tupperware type container or a Pelican
waterproof box for each group of kayaks, so don't be caught out
at the Westwater put-in without one. By launching at Loma Vista, you can
add 2-3 days onto the trip and float Ruby & Horsethief Canyons (Class I-II), but
very scenic and has great hikes along the way. These canyons have a permit
system too for Friday-Sunday launches. Weekday permits are by signup at
Loma Vista, where you sign up & reserve your campsite. See the BLM site for more
details.
